About Us

Power Futures Lab (PFL) is a leading centre of excellence and expertise for Africa and other emerging and developing economies. Based at the University of Cape Town's Graduate School of Business since 2001, PFL works to create enhanced knowledge and capability in key network infrastructures in Africa that promote economic development and improve social welfare within the bounds of environmental sustainability.

1.    PFL WORKS ON THREE FRONTS:

i.    Education and training

Providing specialised and relevant education and training through our PhD programme and through GSB executive education courses in partnership with leading international experts and local practitioners

ii.   Research

Producing high-quality, multi-disciplinary applied research on the African power sector focused on three interrelated areas:

    • Policy, planning, procurement and risk mitigation programmes for accelerating power sector investments and improved outcomes
    • New power markets sparked by an energy transition that is seeing a greater share of renewable energy and distributed energy resources
    • Structural, governance and regulatory reforms for Improving power utility performance
    • Improving electricity access


iii.   Professional support and policy advocacy

Using our academic base, knowledge and reputation to provide evidence-based advisory support and policy advocacy to government, regulators, utilities, finance institutions and development partners (incl. policy advice, technical assistance, research support, media engagements) as part of a broader social responsiveness agenda.


2.    RESPONDING TO CHANGE

Power Futures Lab aims to help leaders, managers and professionals in infrastructure sectors around the world – and in particular in Africa -  that are facing new and complex challenges as rapid innovation in technologies and energy markets disrupt established ways of operating and thinking.


3.   BACKED BY AN INTERNATIONAL NETWORK OF EXPERTS

Power Futures Lab works with a wide network of experts from a number of leading local and international partners. The commitment is to provide cutting-edge international knowledge and expertise which is relevant to the experience of African countries and other emerging and developing economies.


4.   FOCUS ON EXECUTIVE AND PROFESSIONAL SHORT COURSES

A suite of intensive one-week residential courses are offered for leaders and professionals in government, regulatory authorities, utilities and the private sector. Courses can also be custom-designed and delivered at home institutions.


5.   SUPPORTED BY LEADING-EDGE RESEARCH

The courses are backed by an academic programme of research. Full-time Doctoral and Post-Doc students work with Faculty on strategically important research topics in the area of infrastructure investment, restructuring and regulation related topics. The research ensures that the executive and professional short courses benefit from a continued deepening of knowledge which reflects the frontiers of international perspectives and understanding, and African experience.
