Overcoming Acceleration Challenges in the South African Energy Transition (ACCELERATE)

ACCELERATE is an applied research project that aims to contribute to an accelerated and just transition to renewable energy in emerging economies, including job creation and economic development of local communities and local industries.

The project generates new knowledge on how countries at an advanced stage of renewable energy procurement face 'acceleration challenges' — such as resistance from labour unions and declining industries — that prevent further scaling and require substantial policy and research efforts.

The project applies a theoretical framework based on the sustainability transitions literature, combining insights from RE procurement policies, policy mixes, labour market economics, just transition, and transition governance.
