Welcome to the Sub-Saharan Africa IPP Dashboard
Access to electricity remains a challenge in Sub-Saharan Africa, and the investments required for secure, reliable, and affordable electricity in the region exceed governments’ already stretched budgets. Independent Power Producers (IPPs) – greenfield, grid-connected, non-backup, utility-scale (greater than 5 MW) generators which are developed, financed, constructed, majority-owned and operated by the private sector continue to be a growing source of investment in the region’s power sector.
This dashboard provides a comprehensive overview of IPPs across Sub-Saharan Africa to deepen understanding of the state of play of private power investments across the region. It highlights key trends in investment flows and sources, technology deployment, procurement trends, and national developments. By showcasing both the progress achieved and the challenges that persist, it supports evidence-based decisions and strategic collaboration toward expanding access to sustainable, affordable, and resilient power across the continent.
