Power Markets and Trading in
Africa

This executive short course provides a comprehensive understanding of how power markets are
designed and operated, both in theory and in practice, with a special focus on South Africa.
Participants will explore the principles underpinning electricity markets, examine market structures
and trading mechanisms, and analyse how regulation and market design influence investment, system
reliability, and renewable energy integration. The course combines theory, practical case studies, and
interactive simulation exercises.

Dr. Wikus Kruger

Director, Power Futures Lab

Director of the Power Futures Lab and research lead on power sector investment in sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Kruger's research focuses on accelerating renewable energy investment through structured procurement programmes such as auctions. With 14 years of experience in the African energy sector, he holds a PhD from UCT, an MSc from Antwerp University, and multiple degrees from Stellenbosch University.

Dr. Samson Hadush

Visiting Faculty · Power System Economist

Dr. Samson Hadush is a power system economist with over a decade of experience at the intersection of economics, regulation, and power system planning. He supports evidence-based policymaking, regulatory reform, and market development across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa — addressing challenges including power market design and renewable integration at national and regional level. He collaborates with regulators, utilities, and international organisations to design market strategies and policy-aligned investment plans. He holds a PhD in Engineering Science from KU Leuven, Belgium.
